This parallel adapter connects the printer directly from the parallel connection on back of printer to the usb port on the laptop. Works great! I tried a cable that connected to the printer parallel cable and the usb port and couldn't get it to work. This worked right away. The laptop is XP.

The problem for those of us with legacy printers that we still like is that modern motherboards seldom have parallel ports. This adapter cable is the perfect solution. Works with my two Vista computers, one 32-bit and one 64-bit, quite invisibly.

I got this on clearance at Walmart for 16 bucks! Had just bought a spanking new computer system with Windows Vista. Couldn't decide on a printer. Found out by using a bidirectional USB to Parallel port cable I could possibly use my HP with my new system. Hooked everything up & the computer system installed the printer for me. Didn't have to do a thing. The only things I noticed is that there was only an option for installation for HP Deskjet 720C rather than 722C, which is what my printer is ... and I used to be able to do double-sided printing with my old Windows 98SE system .... with my new system (Windows Vista), I cannot. Still, it's enough to get me by until I can decide on a new all in one printer. If anyone is leary about using these cables, don't be. They work! Just allow your Windows Vista system to do the installation for you!
