The Cisco ASA SSM 10 module does exactly what it is supposed to do. With minimal configuration, you slap it in the back of the ASA 5510 and run a short setup. From there you can use the GUI interface to easily configure the product. It looks at packets coming into the ASA based on pre-defined rules which you can tweak and based on the rule will alert, drop, or freeze the connection from and IP to to an internal IP. HOWEVER.... Cisco and their prefered vendors have a very difficlut time for some reason with coming up with the correct part number for the subscription service for this part. This past October 2007, I purchased what I was told, and confirmed by Cisco was the correct part number. Thus now I have a Cisco ASA 5510 with an outdated SSM10 module. Cisco had difficulty finding the part number for the serial number of the module. It is noe January 2008, and I am STILL trying to get the correct part numbers from two vendors and Cisco to I can get the correct subscription service! For that one reason, and the months of frustration I have to rate this product lower than what it is worth. $1,200 a year is not worth the subscription cost for updates for our small business if indeed that is the correct part # !
