Most work places now days tend to prefer wireless networks to wired ones. Wireless networks may be a lot more convenient but they do have reliability and performance issues. Wired networks do not have any issues with performance and reliability.

The only problem with having a wired network in an office or your home would be the fact that you would need to make provision for the RJ-45 cables connecting your devices. Usually offices make provisions for them within the walls so the wires are not visible. Without these provisions you would have quite a few problems in keeping them organized. Now to start up an organized wired network between your computers or other devices such as printers they would require an Ethernet port which is present on almost all devices now days. On a wireless network all devices would require WI-FI capability or you would have to buy a wireless internet adapter.

Next and most importantly you would require a cable switch and router. The router would act as the regulator of your network. A router is designed to connect networks together. For example if you are supplied broadband from an external network the router would connect your home network to the external and regular the connection equally among all the devices connected within the home network. A router is vital to the exchange of data from one network to another. When a connection is made between two networks you will also require a cable switch which will connect the two networks before data passes through the router. If you aren’t planning to connect your home network to any external network you can basically get a switch instead of a router. Switches connect computers together whereas routers connect entire networks.

Wired networks connected via routers are a lot more efficient and fast thanks to the low latency or ping. This is why most offices prefer to use wired networks if they require high bandwidth. This way network interaction is a lot more responsive and efficient.
