Laptop batteries are lithium ion batteries that tend to lose their charge capacity over a few years. They need to be replaced after that time if you wish to keep your laptop portable. Meanwhile, you can maximize your portable computing by using your current battery wisely. Here are a few basic pointers that will have your laptop batteries performing at their peak levels.
1. Opt for a smaller laptop rather than a desktop replacement laptop. Netbooks or small screen laptops use less power, making them more portable with their longer battery life. No matter the laptop size, Dell laptop batteries tend to have longer lifespans than most other brands.
2. Unless you need very high performance on the go, opt for hard drives that use less power. 4200 rpm drives consume less power than their faster counterparts. The speed only makes a difference if you use the laptop to play games or watch HD movies. If you plan on using it to check your mail and work on the go then you’ll find a 4200 rpm disk suitable.
3. Reduce your laptop’s screen brightness to make the battery last much longer. Unless you’re in a very bright room or outdoors, you don’t need your laptop screen at the highest brightness setting. When you lower the brightness, it uses less energy.
4. You can use accessories like the AST laptop accessories to improve your laptop battery performance.
5. Every two months, remember to drain your laptop battery completely. To do this, use your laptop while not plugged into an outlet, until it powers down from running out of power. This way the battery charge cycle resets and the charging capacity lasts longer.
