Overclocking your home laptop processor

When you’re looking for a cheap, inexpensive way to boost your home laptop’s performance a good choice is to try and overclock your computer processor or central processing unit (CPU). The CPU controls the normal basic processing functions of a computer including booting up, loading software or if you’re playing games how much activity can occur on-screen at a time. This is especially vital for MMORPGs such as ‘Final Fantasy XIV’ or ‘World of Warcraft’ when the slight tweak of a processor can often mean the difference between barely being able to run your game and stabilizing it.
Of course, it’s very easy to cause irreparable damage to the inside of your computer so it’s always best to be careful when performing any type of maintenance or tweaks. Although the following abbreviated list was written with the beginner in mind, always be sure to consult with an expert if you’re unsure of what you’re doing.
- Boot up or restart your laptop and wait for the OS to display a command prompt asking you to press a specific key to enter “setup.” Typically, the key is either the “F” key or “F3.”
- Once you’re in the command BIOS, select the function “CPU Frequency” to enter a page that will display your CPU’s internal clock speed.
- Increase the clock speed by a small increment and save changes by clicking “accept.”
- Reboot your home laptop and test for normal function.
- Be sure to write down the original clock speed just in case you need to make any changes due to stabilization errors. Also, keep in mind that overclocking your computer can often cause it to overheat and increase wear and tear.
