I was told that high volume through cheaper switches can cause overheating and erratic performance, so I looked for a better quality switch and found the HP ProCurve to be both highly recommended and carries a lifetime warranty. I replaced the switch in our office system that affected my computer and after several months of use I and the others using it have ceased to have issues. Slow speeds and hangs were a frustration at one of our point of purchase terminals, so I recently replaced the switch that affected that terminal with a ProCurve and everything now runs as it should. I'm no IT pro, but these seem to have cured some of our IT guy's "software problems."

Truly plug and play! Plugged everything in, and it all worked without a hitch. I'm using this to connect to a Home Server PC, and speed wise, I can't tell any difference between using network storage or a USB drive. Of course I haven't actually timed anything, but this is definitely a huge step up from 100 Mbps Ethernet.

Update: Have purchased one for home, and a couple more for work. For some areas, we can't easily run more CAT5 cable, so switches are the only solution. However, cheaper switches have given me problems with weird behavior, often flaking out at the most inopportune times, but the HP switches haven't had any problems. For any kind of business setting, don't waste your money on cheap, consumer-grade products. Spend another $20-30 and get one that will last. This switch doesn't disappoint.
